How to Set up Static Routes on TP-LINK Wireless Modem Routers

How to Setup the Blocks

Step 1 - Login to your Router

a. Type http://192.168.1.1 into web browser address bar (also try http://192.168.0.1 or  http://192.168.2.1)

b. Enter router username and password. The default username & password is usually admin for both.

Step 2 - Add Static Routes

a. Write down your router IP and then click on 'Route Settings'

b. Click on 'Add New'

c. Add the following to the Route List:
  • Network/Host IP: 8.8.8.8
  • Netmask: 255.255.255.255
  • Gateway: your router IP
  • Interface: LAN

d. Click on 'Save'

e. Repeat steps B, C and D for the following routes:
  • Network/Host IP: 8.8.4.4
  • Netmask: 255.255.255.255
  • Gateway: your router IP
  • Interface: LAN

Step 3 - Ping check

Please complete one of the following steps from a computer connected to the router:

a. Open the Command Prompt or Terminal.
  • Windows: Press the Windows Key AND the R Key at the same time on your keyboard. Type in cmd and press Enter.
  • Mac OSX: In the upper right corner of your screen, where the search function is, type in Terminal and open the program.

b. Run the following commands:
  • Type in:ping 8.8.8.8
  • Type in:ping 8.8.4.4

The ping tests above should fail. If any of them give you a response, check your Static routes or reboot the router and try this step again until the pings fail. You might also need to use a different gateway IP such as 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.0.253. Essentially any unreachable IP that the router accepts should work.

Step 4 - Power-Cycle Devices

a. Turn off your device.

b. Unplug the power cable from the router.

c. Wait 30 seconds.

d. Plug in router.

e. Turn on your device.

If settings get corrupt, you always have the option of resetting the router but make sure you make note of your current settings or back them up first.
The instructions and commands are provided AS IS for you to try and may or may not work depending on your actual router and the features available for you.

HOW DOES THE WIRELESS SIGNAL EXTENDER WORK? / INSTALLING WIRELESS EXENDER

HOW  DOES  THE  WIRELESS  SIGNAL  EXTENDER  WORK?
You could have your router downstairs beaming a very strong wireless signal downstairs, but when you go upstairs that very strong wireless signal becomes very weak. In this scenario a booster would help. It would be in the weak signal upstairs room boosting that weak/poor signal.A wireless signal extender (booster) acts in a completely different way to an access point. Its only job is to wirelessly connect to your router's very strong wireless signal and boost it inside another room that is known to receive a poor/weak wireless signal. So to clarify.
INSTALLING  THE  WIRELESS  SIGNAL  EXTENDER
Here are the first steps to take before running the Installation CD:
  • Make sure your router, computer and extender are all switched OFF and all next to each other
  • Plug the extender's power supply unit (psu) into an electric socket with its other end going into the back of the extender
  • Plug one end of the supplied ethernet cable into the extender and the other end into your computer
  • Screw the two antennas on the extender and point the antennas towards the sky
  • Switch your router on and wait until all of its lights are on
  • Switch your computer on and wait two minutes after its desktop appears
  • Switch the extender on and give it a couple of minutes to settle down
  • Insert the extender's installation cd
When you have carried out the above steps and inserted the Installation CD you should then see the following autoplay message requester appear. If it doesn't appear you will need to explore the installation cd for the autorun setup file (not exampled here). In this example simply click on the RUN AUTORUN.EXE link to launch (run) the Installation Wizard.

Fig 1.0 - Click on the RUN AUTORUN.EXE link to continue
The first step of the Installation Wizard asks you to identify your particular model of the extender, so that it knows what Easy Setup Assistant to launch (Fig 1.2). Once you have identified your extender model hover the mouse pointer over its image, to bring up its menu-items, and then click on the EASY SETUP ASSISTANT menu-item to continue. In this example I am using the TL-WA830RE model.

Clicking on the EASY SETUP ASSISTANT menu-item displays the first step (Welcome message) of the Easy Setup Assistant, launched by the Installation Wizard. At this point it is the Easy Setup Assistant that will guide you through the installation process. Just click on its STARTS button to continue.

With the four next steps of the Easy Setup Assistant you can simply click on their NEXT buttons because they are only telling you how to plug in the cables and so on, just like I have mentioned above in my 8 pre-installation steps.

Fig 1.6  click on the NEXT button to continue.

In Fig 1.5 above it is very important you double check that the lights on your extender are either flashing or steady as described in that diagram before you click on the NEXT button. Assuming they are, the next step (Fig 1.6 above) asks you to insert your extender's Default IP Address; which should be 192.168.0.254 - Check the label underneath, or on the side of, the extender for these details. In my case the Default IP Address was already inserted into the above window for me by the easy setup assistant; so I only needed to click on the NEXT button to continue.

Step 7 of the easy setup assistant (below) does a check-up of your network configuration with regards to installing/configuring the extender, to make sure everything is okay. In this example the Windows 7 firewall was blocking it from doing certain network/installation activities; hence why I had to click on the ALLOW ACCESS button of the Windows 7 security alert (firewall message requester) to continue.(ticked) the option called PRIVATE NETWORKS, SUCH AS MY HOME OR WORK NETWORK to make sure the extender would work with my home network.

Fig 1.9 Network checks successful - Click on the NEXT button to continue

With the network checks successful (above) and the extender installed, but not fully configured yet, you will be presented with your router's wireless network name and settings; which in my case are from my Yoingco wireless network. Verify that these details are correct before clicking on the NEXT button. These router wireless network settings will be used to configure the extender's network settings.

Fig 1.10 Make sure these router wireless network settings are correct before clicking on the NEXT button

After a little more configuring the easy setup assistant will ask you to enter the router's wireless network password (below). Simply enter it and click on the NEXT button to continue. If you make a mistake (i.e. realise you have the wrong wireless network) you can click on the BACK button. In this example all was fine (Fig 1.12 below).

Fig 1.11 Enter the password of your router's wireless network before clicking on the NEXT button
Set Up Wireless Access Point
Fig 1.12 Click on the NEXT button to submit these wireless network settings to the extender

At this point (Fig 1.12 above) you really need to make sure the wireless network settings you have entered above are for the wireless network you want the extender to use and connect to. If they are not, click on the BACK button to start over. Otherwise click on the NEXT button to complete the final stages of installation.
